According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) on the 2nd, the MCST, the Korea Copyright Commission (KCC), and the Korea Copyright Protection Agency (KCOPA) will run ‘Copyright Week’ throughout this month. The initiative, which has been held since 2024 as ‘Copyright Festival Month,’ has been renamed, with a focus on fostering a culture that respects copyright.
The ‘2026 International Copyright Technology Conference,’ to be held on the 4th at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul in Seoul, will address learning data and copyright technology in the era of generative AI. The ‘2026 Seoul Copyright Forum,’ taking place on the 12th at The Ambassador Seoul – A Pullman Hotel, will discuss ways to build a sustainable creative ecosystem alongside generative AI. Both events will be streamed live online.
According to the ‘Guide to Copyright Registration for Works Created Using Generative Artificial Intelligence,’ published by the MCST and the Copyright Commission, AI-generated outputs themselves are not eligible for copyright registration. However, if human creative contribution is recognized in the process of selecting, arranging, or organizing them, they may be registered as a compilation work.
The ‘10th Overseas Intellectual Property Protection Council,’ involving 33 organizations, including relevant government ministries, public institutions, and private associations and groups, will meet on the 5th to discuss measures to address intellectual property infringement overseas.
An academic seminar on legislative issues in copyright law will be held on the 20th, while the ‘4th Copyright Protection Future Forum’ will take place on the 25th to discuss strategies for copyright protection and the lawful use of AI training data and AI models.
Public participation events will also continue. Family education and activity programs will be held on the 14th and 28th at the National Copyright Museum in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province. On the 27th, a ‘Copyright Talk Concert’ featuring former Constitutional Court Justice Moon Hyung-bae will be held at the Copyright Commission’s headquarters in Jinju to discuss creators’ rights and the value of respect.
On the 19th, 50 winners of the ‘2026 Copyright Awareness Contest’ will be awarded at the Copyright Commission’s Seoul office. On the 25th, a ‘Copyright Culture Day’ event linked to a film screening is scheduled to take place at Lotte Cinema Jinju Innovation.
At the gaming expo ‘G-Star,’ to be held from the 19th to the 22nd at Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), a booth offering copyright information and consultations will be set up. The Copyright Commission’s online channels will feature videos starring its ambassador, choreographer Lia Kim, as well as interactive events.
Choi Young-jin, the MCST’s Director General for Copyright Policy, said, “At a time when generative artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the nature of creative work, a culture that respects creators’ rights is more important than ever.”
