【Financial News, Jeju Province = Jeong Yong-bok】 Jeju National University Hospital has declared the protection of patients’ human rights, workers’ rights to safety and health, and the guarantee of trade union activities as core management principles. It also plans to strengthen systems for preventing human rights violations and providing remedies when harm occurs.
According to Jeju National University Hospital on the 1st, Hospital President Won Young Jang signed the declaration on behalf of the hospital’s faculty and staff at the proclamation ceremony for the human rights management declaration, held in the hospital’s international conference room on October 28.
The declaration states that patients’ human rights will be protected as the top priority and that the occupational safety and right to health of all workers will be guaranteed. It also pledges to guarantee employees’ freedom of association and collective bargaining and to respect the organization and activities of trade unions.
The declaration also sets out the human rights protection responsibilities of partner organizations involved in hospital operations. The hospital plans to support partner companies in implementing human rights management and to work to protect the environment, prevent pollution, and protect the human rights of local residents.
In particular, the hospital will strengthen systems to prevent human rights violations and provide remedies for victims. If a violation occurs, it will promptly take appropriate remedial measures, and plans to foster a culture of respect for human rights within the organization through regular human rights training and practical activities.
Human rights management at national university hospitals is significant because it encompasses not only patients’ right to receive medical care but also the working conditions of medical staff and other employees, as well as relationships with partner companies.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) also recommends that public institutions conduct human rights impact assessments and operate redress procedures so that human rights management does not stop at a declaration, and that they report on and evaluate implementation results. Jeju National University Hospital, too, still faces the task of putting the declaration into practice and ensuring that measures to prevent and remedy human rights violations are effective.
Hospital President Won Young Jang of Jeju National University Hospital said, “We plan to make human rights, safety, and the environment our top management priorities and reflect them in our core work,” adding, “All members will work together to ensure that human rights management takes firm root and that we fulfill our social responsibilities.”
