【Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, reporter】Gangwon Hanwoo cattle claimed both the overall title in the local government division and the Grand Champion award at the country’s most prestigious Hanwoo judging event.
On the 1st, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province said it won the overall title in the local government division and 3 million won in prize money at the 22nd National Hanwoo Contest, held on October 30 at the main event venue at Nonghyup Anseong Farmland in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. In the farm division, a farm run by Yu Dae-hwan in Yeongwol County won Grand Champion in the third division for cows that have calved, taking home the Presidential Award—the contest’s highest honor—and 20 million won in prize money.
The awards continued in other categories. A farm run by Park Si-deok in Hongcheon won an Encouragement Award in the calf category, along with the Hanwoo Self-Sufficiency Fund Management Committee Chairperson’s Award and 2 million won in prize money. In the livestock cooperative category, Pyeongchang-Yeongwol-Jeongseon Livestock Cooperative won gold and received 3 million won in prize money.
The National Hanwoo Contest is hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and organized by NongHyup Agribusiness Group Inc. Held annually, it selects and awards the Hanwoo cattle that have shown the greatest improvement through breeding among entries from across the country, and shares the breeding achievements to date with farmers and encourages them to work to improve quality.
A Gangwon Province official said, “The Yeongwol farm’s Grand Champion title, along with awards across the calf and livestock cooperative categories, culminated in the overall championship. Since this achievement reflects the hard work of farms and livestock cooperatives that have remained committed to breeding improvements despite difficult conditions, we will continue supporting those efforts so that Gangwon Hanwoo becomes a brand recognized for its quality.”
