[Financial News] A landlord who grabbed a departing delivery motorcycle and pulled it over, causing the rider to fall, was apprehended by police after the rider used the elevator while delivering food to a residential building.
On the 1st, according to legal sources and police, Iksan Police Station in North Jeolla Province said it plans to refer A, the building’s landlord, to prosecutors on charges of assault and property damage.
At around 2 p.m. on October 19 of last month, A allegedly hurled verbal abuse at B, a man in his 30s who owns a restaurant specializing in food delivery, at the first-floor entrance of a residential building in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. A is also accused of grabbing B by the arm as he was about to leave and knocking him over along with his motorcycle.
B, who has operated a Korean food delivery restaurant in Iksan for seven years, used the elevator that day to deliver food to a regular customer who was a tenant living on the fourth floor. After finishing the delivery and coming outside, B found A blocking the entrance and picking a fight, saying, “Who do you think you are to use the elevator? Did you rent the whole thing?”
When B retorted, “Then tell the tenants not to order deliveries,” A said, “Your delivery drivers are driving up the maintenance fees,” and berated him: “You can run up to the fourth floor. Why take the elevator?”
After the argument, B started his motorcycle and began to leave. A then yanked B’s right elbow forcefully. The motorcycle, which weighed about 200 kg, toppled to the right, leaving B trapped underneath it. The side mirror was broken, and the handlebars, brake lever and delivery box were broken or scratched, resulting in damage amounting to around 2 million won in repair costs.
Immediately after the incident, B protested while looking at his damaged motorcycle. A denied the allegations, saying, “I never pulled. You fell on your own.” When B asked who would be responsible for the repair costs, A reportedly drove him away with verbal abuse, saying, “Delivery drivers have to pay 5 million won if they use the elevator.”
B eventually filed a complaint with police, attaching a medical certificate and photos of the damage at the scene. B, who had been diagnosed with a herniated disc about two weeks before the incident and was receiving treatment, said his symptoms had worsened sharply as a result of the accident.
A reportedly told police investigators that he was angry because delivery drivers were causing elevator-related maintenance fees to rise. When police asked why he did not put up a notice banning delivery drivers from using the elevator, A reportedly refused, saying, “This is a neighborhood of studio apartments near a university. If I put up a notice like that, student tenants won’t move in.”
Police plan to send the case to prosecutors, concluding that the charges against A are supported by the circumstances at the scene and the evidence.
