[Financial News] A service that consolidates cargo and delivers it in bulk to large shipyards to reduce logistics costs for domestic shipbuilding equipment companies is gaining momentum.
Busan City said that, as its project to establish and operate a joint delivery platform for shipbuilding equipment gathers momentum, it launched the joint delivery service for Hanwha Ocean starting on the 1st.
The platform now provides a joint delivery system for shipbuilding equipment serving major domestic shipyards, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, as well as regional shipyards such as HJ Shipbuilding & Construction and SB Daesun.
The establishment of this joint delivery platform is expected to greatly help shipbuilding equipment companies cut logistics and overall costs by simplifying deliveries, and strengthen their competitiveness.
The joint delivery platform for shipbuilding equipment is a logistics service that consolidates cargo from multiple equipment companies and delivers it in bulk to shipyards and other destinations.
It operates to reduce the logistics costs associated with individual shipments and improve delivery efficiency.
Based on delivery schedules provided in advance by shipyards, large vehicles visit multiple companies to collect shipments and deliver them together to the shipyards.
This reduces delivery transportation costs and improves delivery logistics, including by streamlining work through having deliveries handled on companies’ behalf.
When joint transportation is difficult, companies can also use dedicated transportation tailored to their shipment volumes and delivery schedules.
Both joint delivery and dedicated transportation are available at rates averaging 15% lower than prevailing transportation rates, and up to 25% lower.
Since the joint delivery platform began full-scale operations in March this year, about 110 shipbuilding equipment companies have used it to transport deliveries. Transportation costs were also about 15% lower than with the previous individual-shipment system.
As the project progressed, Busan City established a cooperative framework not only with major domestic shipyards but also with shipyards in the Busan area, laying the groundwork for expanding joint deliveries through the coordination of delivery information and improvements to delivery procedures.
Busan City expects this expansion of the service to help strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation among major shipyards, regional shipyards and small and medium-sized shipbuilding equipment companies.
It also expects that increased volumes of jointly transported goods and more efficient logistics operations will help improve the logistics system, including by easing vehicle congestion within shipyards.
Users can access the joint delivery platform on the web or via mobile to request transportation and easily manage transport records.

Busan Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “The expansion of this joint delivery platform’s services is an example of how support from Busan City and cooperation among major shipyards, regional shipyards and small and medium-sized shipbuilding equipment companies have led to tangible reductions in logistics costs.” He added, “We will continue to actively support the region’s shipbuilding and marine industries to enhance their competitiveness and enable shipyards and equipment companies to grow together.”
