[Financial News] Hwang Hee-chan (30, Schalke 04), a national team striker who came under fire in Germany for an outburst in which he shoved a fourth official in protest over a referee’s decision, eventually bowed his head before the squad. His swift apology and remorse spared him the worst-case scenario of internal club discipline, but he now faces the heavy task of rebuilding the trust he has lost on and off the pitch.
According to German outlet Kicker on the 30th (local time), Schalke coach Miron Muslic emphasized discipline and explained the club’s principles in connection with Hwang Hee-chan’s outburst. Hwang, for his part, reportedly apologized, deeply regretting his actions.
The incident began during the second-round match of the 2026–27 German Football Association (DFB) Cup against Dynamo Dresden on the 29th. Hwang strongly protested a decision not to call a foul, then forcefully shoved the fourth official on the touchline. He also pushed away with both hands a Schalke physiotherapist who was trying to restrain him, earning a yellow card from the referee. German media sharply criticized him, saying “he was lucky not to be sent off,” and even coach Muslic publicly rebuked him, saying, “I absolutely do not like it. We will definitely address it.”
It was a close call that could have led to severe punishment, such as a suspension, but Hwang’s immediate apology brought the situation closer to a resolution. Coach Muslic explained, “We discussed this issue with the entire squad gathered together,” and added, “Since I took over, our team has never once had a disciplinary problem. I made that clear to Hwang Hee-chan, and he fully accepted it and showed that he was deeply remorseful.”

Having avoided club punishment, Hwang Hee-chan is expected to feature in the home match against his former club RB Leipzig in the eighth round of the Bundesliga, which kicks off at 11:30 p.m. on the 31st at Veltins-Arena.
Hwang Hee-chan, who left Wolverhampton in the English Premier League (EPL) for a loan move to Schalke this summer, has featured in six official matches so far but has yet to score his first goal. After taking heavy public criticism for an unnecessary failure to control his emotions, what Hwang needs most now is not to protest that he was wronged, but to score a clean “redemption goal” that proves his true worth.
