According to legal sources on the 31st, Judge Park Dong-uk of the Chuncheon District Court’s Criminal Division 3, sitting alone, sentenced A (67), who was indicted for violating the Act on the Punishment, etc. of Stalking Crime, to one year in prison and ordered him to complete 40 hours of a stalking treatment program. A was sent to trial on charges of visiting the owner of a supermarket in Chuncheon four times between June 7 and August 12.
A’s first visit was on June 7, just four days after his release from prison. He entered the store and said to the owner, “Aren’t you going to say hello? I got out of prison,” then kicked the entrance door when the owner locked it. Investigators found that A had been released on the 3rd of the same month after serving a three-year prison sentence for special extortion and stalking offenses, among other crimes.
Despite the police warning, A returned to the store a little over a month later. He challenged the owner, asking, “Do you have a problem with me?” Police who responded to a report took steps to keep the two apart. However, A continued to visit the store after being questioned by police, yelling and threatening the owner, according to the findings.
The court said it took into account in sentencing that A began stalking the victim immediately after his release and continued approaching the victim even after a report was made, committing the offenses four times in total. It said the victim had suffered emotional distress, but the harm had not been remedied and A had not been forgiven.
