[Financial News] The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 30th (local time) that the United States plans to deport about 150 immigrants from Afghanistan.
According to officials in the Donald Trump administration, dozens of Afghans recently held in detention facilities across the United States were transferred to an immigration detention facility in Louisiana. The United States has no diplomatic relations with the Taliban government, making it difficult to deport Afghans directly to Afghanistan. The Trump administration is therefore reportedly pursuing a plan to send them first to Pakistan, where Pakistani authorities would then hand them over to Afghanistan.
The first deportation flight is expected to depart as early as the 2nd of next month. A government official said the total number of Afghans slated for deportation is expected to exceed 150. If carried out, the measure would rank among the largest single deportation operations involving Afghans. About 97 Afghans have been deported from the United States to Afghanistan over the past four years.
Among the Afghans the Trump administration plans to deport are people who could face persecution under the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist faction. Families of Afghans who helped the U.S. military and gay people are also reportedly among those targeted for deportation.
An Afghan man told a court that his wife, an Afghan policewoman, was arrested and tortured by the Taliban in 2023 because she had helped the U.S. military. The man was arrested after entering the United States illegally in 2024, and a U.S. court rejected his asylum application.
