[Financial News]  A former civil servant couple in their 30s who have declared themselves a “FIRE couple” have drawn attention by revealing a practical early retirement strategy.
Working backward from monthly living expenses, they found they could quit their jobs with net assets of 700 million won

The Subi couple recently appeared on the YouTube channel Pyoyoungho TV and shared in detail how they planned their retirement based on net assets of 700 million won when they quit their jobs. They cited “working backward from monthly living expenses” as a key factor in their decision to quit.
The Subi couple explained, “We analyzed our monthly expenses and set a budget of 2.5 million won a month. Working backward from that, we concluded that with assets of 300 million won per person, or around 600 million won for the two of us, and an annual return of 5–6%, we could build a setup that would allow us to live comfortably.”
After building up 700 million won in assets, they diversified their investments thoroughly

In particular, they divided their 700 million won in assets among three accounts according to their purposes.
The couple said, “We set aside 100 million won for emergency funds and a security deposit, and invested 230 million won in high-dividend ETFs yielding around 10% a year to create a stable monthly cash flow.”  They added that they had “put the remaining 370 million won into long-term investments centered on U.S. growth stocks and leading indices to prepare for retirement 30 years from now.”
They also shared their investment results.  “To generate monthly cash flow, we invested 200 million won across four ETFs (QQQI, GPIQ, GPIX and SPYI), putting 50 million won into each. As a result, over the past three months we have consistently received dividends averaging around 1.6 million won a month,” they said.
Buying a home ties up a large sum ... generating cash flow with that money

Explaining why they focused on cash flow instead of buying a home, they said, “When aiming for FIRE, tying up all your money in housing assets makes it difficult to cover your living expenses right away. We currently live in Jeju Island and pay annual rent to keep our housing costs under control, while actively using our remaining capital to generate cash flow.”
They also offered advice to people who dream of FIRE. The Subi couple stressed the importance of everyday frugality and consistent investing over getting rich overnight. “We started small, such as by cutting back on food delivery, and putting 300,000 to 500,000 won a month to work through compound growth became the foundation for building our assets,” they said. “Rather than being too ambitious, start by steadily learning about investments that suit your own temperament.”
