According to the T&C Foundation on the 31st, it released the documentary ‘Climate Empathy’ on its official YouTube channel at 6 p.m. the previous day. The film documents an overseas empathy tour in Hua Hin, Thailand, involving 25 people, including the foundation’s high school scholarship recipients, known as ‘Fellows,’ and its university scholarship recipients, known as ‘Amis.’
The film began with the question, “How much can we empathize with the climate crisis unfolding far away from me?” The scholarship recipients planted mangrove seedlings and met local children through educational volunteering, confronting the fact that climate change can alter a person’s career path and even the possibilities available in their life.
Mangrove forests are ecosystems that reduce damage from coastal erosion and storm surges and provide habitats for fish and crustaceans. They also absorb and store carbon, playing an important role in addressing climate change and protecting local residents’ livelihoods.
Scholarship recipient Im Su-u said, “On the way to plant mangrove seedlings, I felt the tree roots beneath my feet were saying, ‘I’m breathing here.’” Im added that they hoped the seedlings they planted would grow into a large forest where people and nature could live together.
Scholarship recipient Seo Wan illustrated the potential of small actions with the metaphor of a single coconut washed ashore on an uninhabited island becoming the beginning of a forest. Seo said, “Even if at first it may seem that nothing has changed, the island’s fate has been completely transformed.”
Scholarship recipient Yun Geon-u said, “What changed, rather, was us,” and added, “When we return to our everyday lives, perhaps we can create small changes?”
The T&C Foundation helps scholarship recipients understand other people’s lives and social issues through scholarship support and educational and experiential programs. ‘Climate Empathy’ is available on the foundation’s official YouTube channel.
