U.S. President Donald Trump canceled his scheduled weekend campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa, then reversed course. The two states are among the closest races in this midterm election. They are key battlegrounds that will determine whether Republicans retain their Senate majority.
Foreign media including the Associated Press reported on the 30th (local time) that President Trump had changed his mind again and would hold campaign rallies in both states.
Trump had initially planned to campaign over the weekend in the two states, which are key battlegrounds in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3, but abruptly canceled the appearances. He announced that he would replace them with nearly 20 virtual rallies to support Republican candidates in New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan and elsewhere. The three-day schedule runs through the first of next month. The Republican National Committee (RNC) called it a “72-hour sprint.”
When reporters asked whether the change was due to “health problems,” Trump reacted irritably, saying, “Disgusting” and “Be quiet.”
Sources familiar with Trump’s campaign schedule said it had been changed again so that he would hold rallies in Kansas and Iowa back-to-back on the first of next month.
The two states are part of the so-called Corn Belt, an area dominated by cornfields and home to many farmers. They are traditional Republican strongholds where Trump won by at least 10 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. But Republican Senate candidates are struggling as diesel prices—the key fuel for farm equipment—have soared since the Iran war.
In Kansas, incumbent Senator Roger Marshall is trailing Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton within the margin of error in various polls.
In Iowa, Republican candidate Ashley Hinson and Democratic candidate John Turek are locked in an extremely close race, with polls seesawing between the two.
