[Financial News] The Blue House said on the 30th, responding to some reports that it was preparing a plan to propose an end-of-war declaration to the United States on the occasion of a U.S.-North Korea summit, “There has not yet been any consideration at the government level or anything of the sort.”
A senior Blue House official told reporters that day, “The prospects for a U.S.-North Korea summit are very unclear and uncertain,” adding, “It is unclear whether such a summit will take place, and there are no signs related to it either.”
The official explained, “Since there is no expectation that a summit itself will take place, individuals may develop ideas on their own, but this is not something we are reviewing or preparing.” Asked whether an end-of-war declaration could lead to results at a U.S.-North Korea summit or improve inter-Korean relations, the official replied, “Even hypothetically, if this issue were discussed, it would be difficult to judge what results it might lead to.”
Asked whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to China was related to laying the groundwork for U.S.-North Korea dialogue and whether the chances of such dialogue were increasing, the official said, “As far as we have determined so far, there are no special signs,” but added, “Since the possibility cannot be ruled out, we are keeping various possibilities in mind.”
The official went on to explain that, under the Trump administration, the situation is fluid and difficult to predict, so it is impossible to make a definitive judgment about how things will unfold.
The official stressed that, if U.S.-North Korea dialogue is pursued, South Korea intends to coordinate closely with the United States to ensure its position is reflected.
The official said, “If we enter such a situation, we need to communicate, coordinate and consult with the U.S. side,” adding, “By doing so, we must ensure our position is reflected and play a role in steering the situation in a desirable direction.”
The official added that, in a situation where the U.S. and North Korea are talking directly, “(South Korea) will not participate on the ground; the United States will participate, and we will serve as a pace-setter. For that reason, we are paying attention to the need for a consultation mechanism that will enable us to perform that role well.”
