[Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk said on the 30th, regarding the special counsel’s public verification of ballots related to the National Election Commission, “I hope the special counsel thoroughly and scientifically examines the ballots submitted for verification and uncovers the truth.”
Jang said this after visiting former President Park Chung-hee’s birthplace in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, and speaking with reporters that day. “Many problems have already come to light from what can be seen with the naked eye alone,” he said.
In response to criticism from the Democratic Party of Korea that he was using the ballot shortage crisis to maintain his party leadership, he rebutted, “It’s not that we are trying to exploit the ballot shortage crisis; the president, government and ruling party are turning a blind eye to it. No one is taking responsibility, and no effort is being made to resolve it.”
He also addressed criticism that he was using allegations of election fraud to maintain his party leadership, arguing, “To disparage as politically motivated the act of speaking out alongside citizens who want to protect their precious vote is itself politically motivated.”
Explaining why he visited Olympic Park in Seoul the previous day, he said, “As an observer, I have a responsibility and duty to explain to citizens what happened during the verification process and where the ballots taken outside the stadium are being stored.”
Jang emphasized, “The people guarding Olympic Park aren’t doing so because I told them to. I will fight alongside them and lend what little support I can, as long as even one person remains to fight.”
He added, “I have been able to continue serving as party leader and steer the party through its worsening situation since the impeachment and early presidential election thanks to the party members and supporters who have trusted and supported me.”
