[Financial News]  South Korea and Germany’s power equipment heavyweights have teamed up to target the power grid digitalization market, from predicting substation failures to managing power at AI data centers.
Hyosung Heavy Industries said on the 30th that it signed a ‘Global Strategic Partnership Agreement’ with Siemens AG that day at the InterContinental Grand Seoul Parnas in Seoul. Among those attending the signing ceremony were Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade and Industry; Stephan Rouenhoff, political deputy minister at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy; Woo Tae-hee, CEO of Hyosung Heavy Industries; and Jung Ha-joong, CEO of Siemens Korea. The plan is to combine Hyosung Heavy Industries’ power equipment and engineering technologies with Siemens AG’s expertise in power infrastructure digitalization and energy management to bolster their push into global markets.
AI data centers are one pillar of the partnership. The two companies plan to jointly offer solutions to improve data center operating efficiency by integrating Siemens AG’s ‘Energy Management System (EMS)’ with the next-generation power conversion equipment developed by Hyosung Heavy Industries, the ‘solid-state transformer (SST).’
Digital substations are also a target for joint technology development. Because digital substations can greatly reduce the space taken up by equipment and increase the levels of unmanned operation and automation, they are rapidly replacing conventional substations, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. The two companies plan to combine Hyosung Heavy Industries’ power measurement sensors with Siemens AG’s digital signal conversion devices to meet the differing specifications required by each customer.
In equipment diagnostics, the companies will connect their platforms. Hyosung Heavy Industries’ ‘ARMOUR+’ uses AI to predict signs of abnormalities and the remaining service life of large-scale power equipment such as substations. Siemens AG’s ‘Electrification X’ manages power flows in medium- and low-voltage distribution networks at factories, buildings and other facilities via the cloud. Connecting the two systems will make it possible to view equipment status—from extra-high voltage through medium and low voltage—on a single screen, helping prevent failures and improve operating efficiency. The companies plan to broaden their cooperation beyond preventing power outages to include digital platform businesses covering power load management and control-system security.
“By combining our core technologies, we will go beyond supplying power equipment and evolve into a global end-to-end solutions partner spanning digital power grids and the full operation of AI data centers,” said Woo Tae-hee, CEO of Hyosung Heavy Industries. Jung Ha-joong, CEO of Siemens Korea, said, “By combining Hyosung Heavy Industries’ power infrastructure capabilities with Siemens AG’s digital technologies, we will enhance customer value in digital power infrastructure and data centers and create new growth opportunities together.”
