[Financial News] Kim Ji-yong, chief of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency (SCIA), held his first official meeting with Lee Jung-hyun, acting Prosecutor General (chief of the Public Prosecution Office).
Kim said he would discuss various ways to cooperate, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between investigative and prosecutorial agencies under the new criminal justice system.
Kim arrived at the Public Prosecution Office headquarters in Seocho District, Seoul, at around 1:49 p.m. on the 30th.
Before meeting with the acting chief, Kim told reporters, “The new criminal justice system is now in effect, and the relationship between the Public Prosecution Office, which handles charging and the conduct of prosecutions, and the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, a specialized investigative agency, is very important.” He added, “I came today to meet with the acting chief and discuss various ways for the two agencies to cooperate.”
Asked about practical cooperation, such as handling cases, he replied, “I don’t think we’ll discuss the specifics in detail,” adding, “There may be various ways for staff to cooperate.”
The two had previously attended a State Council meeting chaired by President Lee Jae-myung, but this is their first official meeting since the two agencies were launched on the 2nd.
The meeting is seen as an effort to establish a framework for cooperation between the two agencies ahead of the one-month anniversary of their launch.
The two agencies currently need to coordinate on matters including the transfer of existing cases investigated by the Prosecution Service, as well as the authority to receive applications under the leniency program and assign provisional rankings in cases involving violations of the Fair Trade Act. It remains unclear whether these specific pending issues will be discussed at today’s meeting.
