[Financial News] A Japanese woman with a striking figure—148 cm tall and weighing 132 kg—has boldly entered an idol audition and is attracting widespread attention online.
According to Japanese media outlets including Encount and the Nishinippon Shimbun on the 30th, the person at the center of the buzz is Roma, an aspiring idol who recently took part in an audition to discover new idol talent.
Roma posted photos of herself performing onstage to her X (formerly Twitter) account and revealed her measurements: “It may be hard to believe, but this is my real body, not AI. I’m 148 cm tall and weigh 132 kg.” She added the witty comment, “You can’t see my knees,” making people laugh.
In the released photos, Roma dances energetically onstage wearing a white top, a blue denim miniskirt with frill detailing, and sneakers. The post spread rapidly on social media, as her strikingly distinctive, almost unreal figure was paired with her confident stage presence.
14 Contestants Weigh a Combined 1,273 kg ... What Is the ‘I Declare Myself Fat’ Audition?
The audition Roma took part in is a project with the unusual concept ‘I Declare Myself Fat.’ It was planned with the aim of “turning the experience of being judged negatively because of one’s body, even just once, into a unique personal appeal.”
The 14 contestants in this audition weigh a combined 1,273 kg. Their average body mass index (BMI) is 36.2, well above the average of 21.8 for Japanese women in their 20s overall and in the severe-obesity range. Roma is reportedly the shortest and heaviest of the 14 contestants.
When she entered the audition, Roma opened up about how she felt: “I never imagined that I, who was unbelievably shy and couldn’t exercise at all, would dream of becoming an idol. I’m surprised myself, but I worked up the courage to take on the challenge.”
“Like a cartoon character—cheering her on” vs. “Concerns about joints and health”: Opinions split
Once news of Roma’s challenge spread, local internet users’ reactions were sharply divided.
Those who supported her courage praised her, saying, “Her figure is so cute and lovable,” “It’s like seeing a real-life cartoon character such as Doraemon,” “It’s great that she confidently breaks the mold of conventional idols,” and “I support her dream of finding her own appeal.”
Others continued to voice concerns about health problems caused by excessive weight, saying, “Her weight is far too high for her height, raising concerns about her joints and cardiovascular health,” and “It’s dangerous to package obesity as individuality and consume it.”
Meanwhile, Roma and the other audition contestants, who came together to break stereotypes, are set to hold a solo concert on the 23rd under the project group name ‘Odebu Girls’ (‘Chubby Girls’) and make their official stage appearance.
