【New Delhi, India—Pragya Awasthi, Correspondent】Hyundai Motor Company is launching a new compact electric SUV to target India’s EV market. The model, being developed in India under the codename “HE1i,” is expected to be called the Hyundai Ioniq P when launched. It is being developed as an affordable mass-market electric vehicle.
According to local media reports on the 30th, Hyundai Motor Company executives said during an analyst conference call related to the third-quarter earnings announcement that they plan to introduce the Ioniq P to the Indian market after the launch of the Bayon.
Hyundai Motor Company’s new compact electric SUV had been expected to launch in the second half of 2026, but following a recent schedule adjustment, it is now seen as potentially being unveiled in January 2027.
The new Ioniq P may be offered with two battery options of different capacities. However, specific specifications for the model to be sold in India—including battery capacity, electric motor output and range on a single charge—have not yet been disclosed. Hyundai’s Inster EV, currently on sale in overseas markets, is drawing attention as a point of comparison because it is reportedly based on the same platform. Hyundai Motor Company plans to equip the new compact electric SUV with a next-generation infotainment system. Level 2 driver-assistance technology is also set to be included. The Ioniq P is planned to be manufactured at Hyundai Motor Company’s plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, India.
Tarun Garg, head of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), said the company’s goal is to increase the share of its electric vehicle sales to approach the average for India’s automotive industry by fiscal 2028.
