【Hanoi, Vietnam = Correspondent Kim Joon-seok】POSCO Yamato Vina, a joint venture between POSCO and Japan’s Yamato Kogyo, has been included in an audit by the Government Inspectorate of Vietnam into environmental law compliance at steel production facilities.
According to local media and other sources on the 30th, the Government Inspectorate of Vietnam officially announced the previous day in Hanoi its decision to audit compliance with the Law on Environmental Protection at major steel production facilities in Ho Chi Minh City. The five steel companies named for the audit include POSCO Yamato Vina, Vietnam Southern Steel, Vina Kyoei Steel, Pomina 2 Steel and Tung Ho Vietnam Steel.
The audit will focus on the management of general industrial solid waste and hazardous waste generated during steel manufacturing, and on compliance with regulations for collecting and treating wastewater and exhaust gas under environmental permits.
The audit period runs from January 1, 2024, through October 30, 2026. If necessary, the audit may be expanded to cover relevant matters from before or after that period. The audit will last 30 days from the date the decision was announced.
The Government Inspectorate of Vietnam said the audit is also intended to identify unreasonable aspects and difficulties in current environmental laws and systems, in addition to assessing whether individual companies comply with environmental laws. It therefore asked the companies under audit to actively raise problems with relevant systems and policies.
The five companies under audit, including POSCO Yamato Vina, must submit all relevant documents and materials accurately in response to the audit team’s requests. They must also cooperate closely with the investigative agency during on-site inspections and respond to any requests for additional materials.
