【Financial News Hongcheon = Reporter Kim Gi-seop】The five signature foods of Hongcheon Central Market sold out as soon as they appeared on the livestream, demonstrating the potential of online sales channels for traditional markets.
On the 30th, Hongcheon County said that all five products—kimchi and meat dumplings, buckwheat pancakes, mung bean pancakes, Hongchongtteok, and sorghum bukkumi—sold out during a livestream sale promoting Hongcheon Central Market, held from the 26th through the 28th at the Sodam Square Gangwon studio. Five businesses in the market took part, all of which met the requirements for mail-order business registration and listing on Naver Store.
The broadcast that drew the most attention was on the first day. About 119,000 people tuned in to the sale of Hyesuk’s kimchi and meat dumplings, which began at 11 a.m. on the 26th, and the promotional stock sold out early.
The livestream sale was organized to open up a new sales channel for traditional market merchants as more grocery shopping moves online. It was run in partnership with Sodam Square Gangwon, a support organization specializing in small businesses, which provided cooking and beauty studios as well as funds to offset discounts. Hongcheon County plans to establish the infrastructure for merchants to broadcast directly from the market, without renting an external studio.
A Hongcheon County official said, “More than 110,000 viewers tuned in just for the broadcast of one dumpling product, and all five products sold out, showing that market foods can compete online as well,” adding, “We’ll create the conditions for merchants to go live directly from the market and expand our collaboration with specialized organizations so that this leads to actual sales.”
