[Financial News] KIMFT said on the 30th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding on “Maritime and Ocean Education and Research Cooperation” on the 26th with the World Maritime University (WMU), which operates under the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The agreement centers on cooperation with WMU on official development assistance (ODA) projects and the International Onboard Training Program under the Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).
Under the agreement, the two institutions extended its term from three years to five, establishing a framework for mid- to long-term cooperation. They also agreed to work together on providing Professional Development Courses (PDC), mutual participation in educational programs, developing and collaborating on joint research projects, exchanging information such as research materials and publications, and participating in international conferences related to seafarer policy.
KIMFT plans to apply WMU’s international maritime education network and research capabilities to its ODA projects and ITCP programs. It aims to further enhance the expertise and international credibility of maritime workforce development projects in developing countries.
KIMFT President Yoon Hyun-soo said, “This agreement will be a meaningful opportunity for the two institutions to build on the trust they have developed over many years and jointly explore the future direction of maritime education amid a changing international maritime environment.” He added, “We will work closely with WMU to strengthen the results of ODA projects and international onboard training programs, and take the lead in developing maritime professionals worldwide and advancing maritime education.”
