[Financial News] GS Retail is expanding its social contribution activities related to honoring veterans, focusing on support for persons of national merit and veterans’ families, in partnership with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
According to industry sources on the 30th, GS Retail signed a “Social Contribution Agreement for Honoring Veterans” with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs the previous day at the National Memorial of the Korean Provisional Government in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Minister Kwon Oh-eul and GS Retail CEO Heo Seo-hong attended the signing ceremony, among others.
Since launching its Dokdo Love campaign in 2017, GS Retail has continued patriotic activities, including raising awareness of independence activists, commemorating the Taegeukgi, and donation campaigns inviting people to take part in the March 1 Independence Movement rallies. This year, it selected honoring veterans as one of its key social contribution themes and set “support, remembrance and participation” as its three main priorities.
First, GS Retail will take part in the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs’ “See Independence Patriots Clearly” initiative and support the installation of smart information boards at 18 graves of independence patriots buried outside national cemeteries. The boards provide information on the patriots’ lives and achievements.
GS Retail will also provide daily necessities and food to persons of national merit and veterans’ families. In cooperation with the Independence Hall of Korea, it will offer children from immigrant backgrounds opportunities to learn about and experience the history of the independence movement.
Veterans-related activities involving employees will also become regular events. In addition to existing volunteer work at national cemeteries, the company will expand visits to the graves of independence patriots and site cleanup activities. It will also continue efforts to promote veterans’ commemorative days and raise awareness of independence patriots through customer touchpoints such as GS25, GS The Fresh, mobile apps and social networking services (SNS).
Changheon Kwak, head of sustainability management at GS Retail, said, “Through our cooperation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, we will do our utmost to ensure that social contribution efforts related to honoring veterans become an important pillar of environmental, social and governance (ESG) management and take root as a lasting corporate culture.”
