[Financial News] The story of a Mongolian migrant worker who spotted a worker dangling in midair after his safety harness snapped on the exterior of a 14th-floor apartment building, rushed over without hesitation and saved his life with his bare hands has come to light belatedly a year later, moving many people.
According to Yonhap News Agency on the 30th, the incident occurred on November 14 last year at an apartment complex in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province. At the time, a man identified as A was working on the building’s exterior when his safety harness snapped, leaving him perilously suspended at the height of the 14th floor.
At a moment when he could have fallen at any second, Batbayar Jandanbat, a Mongolian worker who was moving belongings at an apartment building across the way, heard a desperate scream. Jandanbat, who saw A hanging from the exterior and shouting, “Help me,” stopped working without a moment’s hesitation and ran straight to the scene. Rather than simply calling 119, he set off to find a way to reach A and rescue him himself.
Jandanbat ran to the 14th-floor unit where A was hanging, repeatedly knocking on the door and urgently asking for help. When a resident inside opened the door, he immediately leaned over the balcony railing and grabbed A.
The rescue was perilous, with every second counting. At the time, one of A’s hands was caught on the air-conditioning unit’s outdoor component, leaving him unable to exert himself properly, and extreme fear had drained even the strength he needed to support his body. Jandanbat had to bear the full weight of an adult man high above the ground, and the slightest slip could have led to a fall.
To reassure the terrified A, Jandanbat kept speaking to him in halting Korean. He repeated, “Trust me. I’ll hold on tight and pull you up,” and held on with all his strength, eventually managing to pull A inside the balcony.
About a week after the accident, the two met again and tearfully expressed their gratitude. A repeatedly thanked Jandanbat for risking his own safety to save his life.
The heartwarming story that transcended national borders came to light recently, nearly a year after the incident, when a tipster contacted the media, saying they wanted to share Jandanbat’s desperate rescue efforts with the public.
Jandanbat is now a team leader at the moving company where he works. He has earned a reputation as a diligent and exemplary person, serving as an effective bridge between his fellow foreign workers and Korean employees. The owner of the moving company said, “Most people would have called 119 and watched, but as soon as he saw someone hanging there while he was working, he ran over without hesitation,” adding, “He’s always gotten along well with his coworkers and taken the initiative.”
Looking back on what happened, Jandanbat said calmly, “I ran over because I thought he really would fall if I didn’t help quickly. Nationality doesn’t matter, whether someone is Korean or Mongolian. Even if I could go back to that moment, I would have done the same thing if I saw someone in danger.”
