[Financial News] Members of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROK Marine Corps) and employees of a nearby company used fire extinguishers and hoses to put out a fire on an electric truck that had stopped in the middle of the road engulfed in flames, preventing major damage.
On the 28th, Yonhap News and the Gimpo Fire Station in Gyeonggi Province, among others, reported that a fire broke out in the cargo bed of a one-ton electric truck traveling along a two-lane road in Gwijon-ri, Tongjin-eup, Gimpo City, Gyeonggi Province, at around 9:34 a.m. on the 26th.
The cargo bed was loaded with discarded paint cans and wastepaper, so the flames quickly grew. It was a dangerous situation, as the risk of an explosion was increasing due to the nature of electric trucks.
Master Sergeant Park Gyeong-ho (45), with the ROK Marine Corps’ 2nd Division Artillery Battalion, witnessed the fire, quickly stopped his vehicle nearby and assessed the situation. He took a dry-powder fire extinguisher brought out by Hong Seong-chan (29), an employee of a nearby cosmetics company, and began fighting the fire.
The two struggled for about two minutes, successively spraying five fire extinguishers, but the flames would not subside. Hong then brought a hose from inside the building and connected it to an outdoor faucet. When Master Sergeant Park sprayed water through the hose, the flames gradually died down. Other Marines and company employees also helped by bringing fire extinguishers and assisting with the hose connection.
By the time firefighters arrived, much of the fire had already been put out. After they dealt with the remaining embers, the fire was completely extinguished 11 minutes after the report was received.
“The driver seemed flustered, so I grabbed a fire extinguisher first,” Hong said. “By joining forces with the Marines, we were able to prevent further damage.”
People online who heard the story responded: “You’re all truly amazing”; “You handled it bravely and well, living up to the name of the Marine Corps. Impressive”; “I’m always grateful to the soldiers, police officers and firefighters who work hard to protect the lives and property of the public”; and “You could have just ignored it and moved on, but I applaud your dedication.”
