[Financial News] U.S. authorities investigating allegations that advanced NVIDIA chips were being diverted into China have uncovered a close relationship between Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, and a businesswoman suspected of working for the Chinese government. U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly received information about the matter about a year ago but took no significant action.
Alice Huang, “close to Jensen Huang” ... believed to have passed information to the Chinese government
On the 29th, local time, The New York Times (NYT), citing multiple sources, reported that U.S. intelligence agencies believe Alice Huang (Chinese name: Huang Le), a senior executive at Singapore-based data center company Megaspeed International, has been passing information to the Chinese government.
Alice Huang, a Chinese national with a background as a broadcast journalist and experience working for an investment firm in China, is a senior executive at Singapore-headquartered data center company Megaspeed International. She has publicly introduced herself as the company’s CEO, but company records show that she stepped down from an early managing director position.
Megaspeed International builds data centers using NVIDIA chips and then leases them to Chinese companies. It is an NVIDIA cloud partner. Since 2024, U.S. authorities have been investigating whether Megaspeed International smuggled NVIDIA chips into China despite an export ban on the chips.
During an on-site inspection by the U.S. Commerce Department, equipment that had not been installed was discovered. It was also reported that U.S. intelligence agencies detected indications of communications between Alice Huang and CEO Huang while monitoring her.
LinkedIn photos showed Alice Huang drinking with executives from other AI companies at a bar in Taipei, Taiwan, in June 2024, seated beside CEO Huang. She was also spotted leaving a restaurant last May after a business dinner with CEO Huang and people affiliated with AI suppliers.
She reportedly posted photos with CEO Huang on social media, flaunting her ties to him and using them to raise investment funds.
Trump Didn’t Even Warn Jensen Huang ... Possibly Out of Concern About Worsening Trade Relations With China
President Trump received information about this about a year ago but took no significant action. NYT analyzed that the potential impact of NVIDIA chip sales on the U.S. economy and concerns about worsening trade relations with China may have been among the factors considered.
CEO Huang reportedly did not receive a “defensive briefing” informing him that he had become a target of a foreign intelligence agency. NYT said one possible reason was that warning him could have alerted Alice Huang to the fact that she was under surveillance.
U.S. officials at the time believed CEO Huang was likely unaware of Alice Huang’s intelligence-gathering activities, but some within the Trump administration have questioned whether he knew. NYT reported that it was unclear which intelligence agency led the surveillance or what specific information had been leaked, and that the matter could become a major topic at a future U.S.-China summit.
In response to the report, NVIDIA spokesperson John Rizzo said, “Meeting with customers is a normal part of a CEO’s job,” adding that if there had been a threat, the U.S. government would have notified them first. Liu Qiang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, dismissed the report as “baseless insinuations and slander.” The White House, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA) declined to comment.
