[Financial News] German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is visiting South Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific German Business Conference (APK 2026), will visit Ewha Womans University in Seodaemun District, Seoul, on the 30th. Ewha is the only university in South Korea on his itinerary. He will tour the site of Korea-Germany research cooperation and talk with young scientists.
According to Ewha Womans University on the 29th, Merz will visit the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Center for Quantum Nanoscience, located in the university’s Research Collaboration Building, on the 30th. He will be accompanied by Ewha Vice President for Research and External Affairs Park Jeong-su, IBS Vice President Park Bae-ho, and officials from the German government and businesses.
After touring the advanced research facilities, Chancellor Merz is expected to meet with young researchers and exchange views on key science and technology issues, including basic science.
This will be the second visit to Ewha Womans University by a sitting German chancellor, following former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit in 2010. Previously, major world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 2001 and French President François Hollande in 2015, also visited Ewha during trips to South Korea.
Ewha Womans University has maintained exchanges through student exchange agreements with major universities in Germany, including the Free University of Berlin and the University of Munich. German professor Andreas Heinrich leads the Center for Quantum Nanoscience. Recently, Ewha and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany were also jointly selected for the “2025 Korea-Germany Industry-Academia-Research Joint Research Project,” which is jointly supported by the governments of both countries.
An Ewha Womans University official said, “Taking Chancellor Merz’s visit as an opportunity, we will further expand educational and research exchanges with German universities and research institutions, and work to promote joint research between the two countries and nurture the next generation of talent.”
