[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung warned on the 29th, responding to news that a university student who disparaged comfort women victims had been booked: “If you spread false information to attract attention or for fun, you could leave a deeply regrettable stain on your life.”
Lee shared an article on X (formerly Twitter) reporting that a university student had been booked on suspicion of spreading false information about Japanese military comfort women victims, and made the remarks.
Lee wrote, “Spreading false information is a crime,” adding, “The police have formed a dedicated team and are conducting an intensive investigation into the spread of false information that fuels distrust and confrontation.”
He added, “It is likely this was done unknowingly, but a crime is not excused just because someone did not know it was a crime, so I hope people will be careful.”
According to the article Lee shared, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency said the previous day that it had booked without detention a university student in their 20s living in Seoul on suspicion of posting false information about comfort women victims online.
The student is suspected of posting false content disparaging comfort women victims on internet sites 211 times from July 4 to 6. The student reportedly told police during questioning that they had written the posts to attract attention, without any particular purpose.
