[Financial News] The Office of National Security (ONS) at Cheong Wa Dae held an emergency meeting on the 29th in response to North Korea’s ballistic missile launch, reviewing South Korea’s response and the potential impact on security.
The ONS convened an emergency security review meeting attended by relevant agencies, including the Ministry of National Defense and the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS), after North Korea fired around 10 ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea that day.
The meeting focused on the impact on security on the Korean Peninsula of North Korea’s missile launch, which came about two weeks after the previous launch on the 12th. It also reviewed South Korea’s response and called for a thorough response to ensure that necessary follow-up measures proceed without a hitch.
The ONS also made clear that North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches violate UN Security Council resolutions. It pointed out that the launches are serious provocations that do not help manage the current situation stably, and called for an immediate halt to any further launches.
Earlier, the ROK JCS said, “At around 12:30, we detected around 10 short-range ballistic missiles launched from the Wonsan area in North Korea toward the East Sea.” The launch is notable because it came after the Ministry of National Defense proposed talks between the two Koreas’ military authorities to prevent accidental clashes in the area around the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
