[Financial News] Doosan Enerbility is set to begin manufacturing reactors for NuScale Power’s small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States in earnest. The company plans to accelerate the commercialization of SMRs by expanding its cooperation from supplying materials to manufacturing key reactor components.
Doosan Enerbility announced on the 29th that it had signed a contract with NuScale Power of the United States to manufacture upper reactor module (URPV) for SMRs. Executives from both companies, including NuScale Power Chief Operating Officer (COO) Carl Fisher and Kim Jong-doo, president of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group, attended the signing ceremony held that day at Doosan Enerbility’s headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
The contract value was not disclosed, but is estimated to be less than about 400 billion won. Large corporations are required to disclose single sales or supply contracts worth at least 2.5% of their revenue in the most recent fiscal year. Given that Doosan Enerbility’s consolidated revenue last year was about 17.1 trillion won, the mandatory disclosure threshold would be about 427.5 billion won, suggesting the contract value is below that level.
Under the contract, Doosan Enerbility will manufacture the upper reactor module for NuScale Power’s SMR. The upper reactor module is a key component that forms the upper section of the reactor pressure vessel, which contains high-temperature, high-pressure coolant.
Doosan Enerbility previously signed a contract with NuScale Power in 2023 to manufacture SMR materials. The company says its role in the SMR supply chain has expanded through this contract, as it will now take on the actual fabrication of key equipment for commercial reactors in addition to supplying materials.
NuScale Power’s SMR is the first SMR in the United States to receive design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). SMRs are built by manufacturing major components as modules in factories and then assembling and installing them at construction sites, an approach that can reduce construction time and costs compared with conventional large nuclear power plants.
NuScale Power Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Hopkins said, “This contract marks meaningful progress in turning an NRC-approved design into modules that can actually be supplied. Doosan’s manufacturing facilities and the partnership the two companies have built since 2019 have enabled us to secure the production capacity and process maturity needed to deliver SMRs on the schedules our customers require.”
Doosan Enerbility President Kim Jong-doo said, “This contract is an important turning point in moving SMRs from the technical validation stage to actual manufacturing. Drawing on its accumulated experience in nuclear manufacturing, Doosan will support NuScale Power’s commercial projects.”
