[Financial News] A nurse who pledged to donate hematopoietic stem cells while in nursing school donated them to a leukemia patient more than a decade later.
According to Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital on the 29th, Choi Yu-ri, a nurse at the hospital, recently donated hematopoietic stem cells to a leukemia patient.
Choi made the pledge to donate hematopoietic stem cells by chance while she was in nursing school.
More than a decade later, a patient with matching genetic traits was found, and the donation went ahead.
Starting three to four days before the donation, Choi received a mobilizing agent to help the hematopoietic stem cells move smoothly into her peripheral blood. She was then admitted to a university hospital for three days and two nights, where she completed the stem cell collection.
Choi said, “Not long ago, I watched a close friend receive a stem cell transplant from their own older brother, and it made me realize that stem cell donation is by no means something that only happens to other people.” She added, “I’m happy and grateful to be able to share life with someone whose genetic traits happen to match mine.”
She went on to say, “I hope my small act will bring new hope to the patient. I sincerely hope they regain their health and make a full recovery.”
