[Financial News] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has received international recognition for the ethical nature of its artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the excellence of its management system.
KORAIL said on the 29th that it had obtained certification to 'ISO/IEC 42001,' the international standard for AI management systems jointly established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The certification covered the development and management system for KORAIL's 'AI-based voice ticket-booking service.' The service was assessed as meeting the international standard's requirements for improving AI reliability and for building and operating systems responsibly.
KORAIL has worked to establish a culture of proper AI use by updating its internal rules and guidelines on AI use. Last July, it proclaimed an 'AI Ethics Charter,' with all employees pledging to comply, and also obtained the 'AI Ethics Compliance Institution Verification Mark' from the NTIA through ongoing ethics training.
KORAIL President Kim Tae-seung said, "The ultimate goal of AI transformation is to provide better rail services that the public can experience firsthand," adding, "We will continue to upgrade our management system in line with international standards so that the public can use our services with confidence."
The certification is seen as significant because it established a foundation for proactively controlling risks such as bias and privacy violations that may arise when a public transportation agency uses AI, going beyond the simple adoption of technology. As the use of generative AI and automated systems in the public sector has surged recently, data security and the level of ethical management have emerged as key benchmarks determining an institution's credibility.
