Chungnam Governor Park Soo-hyun delivers remarks at an investment agreement ceremony on the 27th (local time) at the New York Hilton Midtown with three global companies in semiconductor, display and battery materials, including Corning Precision Materials Co., Ltd. Provided by Chungnam Province
[Financial News, Hongseong = Kim Won-jun, Staff Writer] South Chungcheong Province attracted $400 million in investment from advanced-technology companies in New York and laid the groundwork for local small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the North American market. It also expanded its global network to support the creation of South Korea’s “AI capital,” visiting a world-class AI innovation hub and international organizations.
South Chungcheong Province said Governor Park Soo-hyun returned home on the afternoon of the 29th after completing a five-day, three-night trip to New York, United States. The trip’s biggest achievement was attracting large-scale foreign investment in advanced industries. On the 27th (local time), Governor Park signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) worth a total of $396.3 million (approximately KRW 538.2 billion) with three global companies in semiconductor, display and battery materials, including Corning Precision Materials Co., Ltd., at the New York Hilton Midtown. The companies plan to build new production facilities and expand existing ones in industrial complexes in Cheonan and Asan, among other locations, which is expected to strengthen the province’s advanced-industry supply chains and create jobs.
Support for local companies seeking to expand overseas also yielded results. A market development delegation for the Americas organized by Chungnam Province and the Chungnam Economic Promotion Agency secured 10 export contracts worth a total of $20.71 million at an export consultation event in New York, with 20 companies taking part. Governor Park visited the event in person and supported marketing efforts by highlighting the quality of Chungnam products to local buyers.
Global cooperation in AI to secure future growth engines will also accelerate. Governor Park visited the “New Jersey AI Hub” at Princeton University to examine a model of close cooperation among government, universities and businesses. He said he planned to “swiftly establish a control tower connecting the province, universities and businesses as one.” He then visited the headquarters of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and met with Associate Administrator Haoliang Xu, broadening Chungnam’s engagement with international organizations as he explored the possibility of bringing a global AI hub to the province.
A Chungnam Province official said, “Despite the short schedule, this trip yielded meaningful results in several areas, including attracting foreign investment, developing export markets and building AI partnerships,” adding, “It will provide a strong impetus for advancing key provincial government initiatives.”
With the New York investment attraction successfully concluded, the project being pursued by Chungnam to create a specialized complex for advanced strategic industries in display and semiconductors, centered on Cheonan and Asan, is also expected to gain momentum. As expanding domestic infrastructure for key raw and subsidiary materials has become an urgent priority amid the recent restructuring of global supply chains, this foreign investment is expected to significantly improve the stability of materials supplies and price competitiveness for advanced manufacturing companies in the province.
