[Financial News] Mirae Asset Securities has signed an agreement to acquire the entire stake in Japan’s Sanko Securities. It will invest a total of 100.6 billion won to acquire the shares and expand the business after the acquisition. The company plans to strengthen its existing proprietary trading business and pursue a retail business in the future.
Mirae Asset Securities said on the 29th that it had signed a share purchase agreement (SPA) to acquire a 100% stake in Sanko Securities from Japan’s Okasan Securities Group through its U.S. subsidiary, US Holdings.
Mirae Asset Securities plans to contribute approximately 100.6 billion won (12 billion yen) to US Holdings for the deal. Of that amount, 47.6 billion won will be used to purchase Sanko Securities shares. The remaining approximately 53 billion won will be injected into Sanko Securities through US Holdings after the deal closes and used to expand its business in Japan. The transaction will close after the conditions precedent set out in the agreement have been met. No specific closing date has been set.
Sanko Securities is an affiliate of Okasan Securities Group that currently operates a proprietary trading business. Proprietary trading is a business in which a securities firm buys and sells financial products using its own funds to generate profits. After acquiring the stake, Mirae Asset Securities plans to strengthen Sanko Securities’ existing business and local operating base.
Over the medium to long term, the company is also preparing to enter the retail business. Its plan is to proceed with the business after completing the procedures required under relevant laws and reorganizing its structure and operations. Japan operates asset-building support schemes, including the small-investment tax-exemption system (NISA). Mirae Asset Securities plans to seek new business opportunities after establishing a local presence.
The company has also left open the possibility of cooperating with the seller, Okasan Securities Group. The two companies plan to discuss ways to collaborate in products and services, but no specific details have been finalized.
The agreement is part of Mirae Asset Securities’ ongoing expansion of its overseas business. The company acquired GHCO, a company specializing in market-making for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Europe, in 2023, and completed its acquisition of Indian securities firm Sharekhan in 2024.
Park Hyeon-Joo, global strategist (GSO) of Mirae Asset Financial Group, has put forward the “Mirae Asset 3.0” vision, with the goal of building a global investment platform. Mirae Asset Securities plans to strengthen its global financial network and digital finance competitiveness by pursuing growth in its existing businesses alongside mergers and acquisitions (M&A). As of the end of June 2026, the company operated 25 local subsidiaries and three offices across 11 regions, including Hong Kong, the United States, India and Vietnam. Its global workforce numbered approximately 5,300.
A Mirae Asset Securities representative said, “Signing this SPA is an important opportunity to establish a local business base in Japan and expand our global operations. We will strengthen Sanko Securities’ existing business while pursuing a retail business over time, after completing the procedures required under relevant laws and reorganizing our operating framework.”
An investment industry official said, “What stands out about this transaction is that funds for business expansion will be invested separately from the acquisition price. The key will be how well the company can build the systems and organization needed for future retail operations while running its existing proprietary trading business steadily.”
