[Financial News] The Ministry of Unification said on the 29th that it had yet to confirm any further developments related to North Korea’s resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at South Korea. Kim Yo Jong, director of the General Affairs Department of North Korea’s Workers’ Party of Korea, threatened on the 22nd that preparations to resume the broadcasts would be completed within this month. She also warned that new weapons would be deployed along the entire border.
A Ministry of Unification official told reporters that “there have been no further developments concerning North Korea’s loudspeakers aimed at South Korea” and that “there has been no particular word about deploying new weapons.” He said, “Kim Yo Jong said in her statement that they were on standby. That means they are preparing to operate them,” adding that no related developments had yet been detected.
The official also said it was not yet possible to conclude that North Korea was responsible for cyberattacks believed to have originated from North Korean IP addresses and concentrated on South Korean financial institutions.
A Ministry of Unification official said, “As the financial authorities have stated, North Korean IP addresses are used for rerouting, so we cannot conclude that North Korea was responsible,” adding, “We will keep a close eye on developments with the relevant agencies.”
Separately, the official explained that the idea of pursuing a declaration to end the Korean War through a North Korea–United States summit, as reported, had already been under consideration since the Moon Jae-in administration. President Lee Jae Myung also proposed in his address to the UN General Assembly in New York on the 22nd of last month (local time) that the Korean Armistice Agreement be replaced with a peace treaty through four-party talks among South Korea, North Korea, the United States and China.
A loudspeaker aimed at South Korea is seen next to a North Korean military guard post, as viewed from a border area in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province, on the 26th. Kim Yo Jong, a department director of the Central Committee of North Korea’s Workers’ Party of Korea, announced that loudspeakers aimed at South Korea would be operated throughout the inter-Korean border area this month.
