[Financial News] The global tokenized stock market has grown more than fivefold so far this year. However, concerns have been raised that domestic regulations need to be updated, as most outstanding issuance is concentrated in offshore products that carry no voting rights.
According to the virtual asset industry on the 29th, DigitalX Research Center, the virtual asset investment platform of Mirae Asset Financial Group, recently published a report titled “Tokenized Stocks: From the Gray Zone to the Regulated Sphere.” As of the 23rd, tokenized stocks circulating on-chain were worth $3.58 billion, a 5.3-fold increase from the start of the year. This far outpaced the 54% growth in the overall real-world asset (RWA) market over the same period.
Currently, 82% of outstanding issuance is accounted for by U.S. offshore products from Binance, Ondo Finance, xStocks, Robinhood and others. Most offer returns linked to share prices but carry no voting rights. The report said that, as overseas trading in tokenized versions of domestic stocks such as SK hynix increases, domestic regulations should also take into account products issued abroad.
Jeong Ji-seong, a research fellow at DigitalX Research Center, said, “If the infrastructure to issue tokenized stocks is not established in Korea, tokenized trading in Korean stocks will first take hold outside the scope of domestic regulations,” adding, “It is important to connect rights, liquidity, collateral and reference prices under consistent rules.”
Meanwhile, since the 2nd, the Financial Services Commission has been seeking public comment on proposed amendments to subordinate regulations under the Act on Electronic Registration of Stocks and Bonds and the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act concerning security tokens. The amendments are scheduled to take effect on February 4 next year.
