[Financial News]   Travel platform MyRealTrip said that a hacking incident exposed users’ names and contact information, as well as their passport numbers. The company warned of possible further harm and urged users to change their passwords.
On the 28th, MyRealTrip said it had posted a statement on its website titled “Notice of Personal Information Breach and Apology,” and confirmed that users’ personal information had been exposed after an unauthorized outsider accessed its system abnormally on the 25th.
The exposed information included names, email addresses, mobile phone numbers, dates of birth, genders, encrypted passwords, passport numbers, and passport expiration dates. For some users, passport numbers and expiration dates were also exposed. Payment information, including credit card details, and booking and purchase histories were not among the exposed data.
MyRealTrip explained, “The information exposed may vary from traveler to traveler, and you can check which items apply to you using our personal information breach lookup,” and added, “As soon as we confirmed the breach, we blocked the abnormal access and inspected and reinforced the related systems.”
The company also warned that misuse of the exposed personal information could lead to identity theft, voice phishing, smishing, and other harm. It advised users not to click links in suspicious text messages or emails and to change their passwords.
The company said that users harmed by this personal information breach could seek redress through procedures such as filing a claim for damages or applying for mediation of a personal information dispute.
MyRealTrip said, “We take this incident very seriously and deeply apologize for causing concern,” adding, “While doing our utmost to determine the circumstances and cause of the incident, we will thoroughly review and strengthen our security systems, take steps to prevent further harm, and do everything we can to ensure this does not happen again.”
