【Financial News, Chuncheon—Kim Gi-seop】A food market offering a chance to sample the flavors of Chuncheon’s old downtown—from buckwheat crepes at Chuncheon Central Market to ssanghwa tea at Yukrim Gogae—and pick up a 3,000-won discount coupon will run for two days starting on the 30th.
According to Chuncheon City on the 29th, the city will hold the Chuncheon Old Downtown Gourmet Market: A Bite-Sized Trip from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the 30th and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 31st, in front of the former Munhwa Theater in Myeong-dong and the employment support center at Yukrim Gogae. The event will link three commercial districts—Central Market, Myeong-dong and Yukrim Gogae—through food, with 285 stores across the districts targeted for participation.
The event will bring together signature dishes from each old-downtown commercial district. Visitors can sample buckwheat crepes, dakgangjeong and sundae from Central Market; dakgalbi and chrysanthemum-shaped pastries from Myeong-dong; and pizza, chicken skewers, shrimp toast and ssanghwa tea from Yukrim Gogae.
Benefits are also on offer to turn tastings into actual purchases. Visitors who sample food at the tasting events in Myeong-dong and Yukrim Gogae will receive 3,000-won discount coupons redeemable at participating stores across the three commercial districts. Those who present a receipt showing a purchase of 30,000 won or more at a participating store can try the prize wheel. Prizes include Onnuri gift certificates, additional discount coupons and massage devices.
The gourmet market is a pilot project the city is undertaking as it prepares to apply next year for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ local commercial district development program. Through the event, the city plans to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of linking commercial districts through local food and use the findings as a foundation for revitalizing old-downtown commercial districts.
A Chuncheon City official said, “We planned the route so visitors wouldn’t stop at sampling the food, but would also use the discount coupons and prizes as a reason to visit shops in Central Market, Myeong-dong and Yukrim Gogae.” The official added, “Ahead of next year’s call for applications for the local commercial district development program, we’ll carefully review the results of this pilot project and use them as a springboard to bring vitality to the old-downtown commercial districts.”
