Tandem OLED boosts brightness and color accuracy
Apple Inc. unveiled 14-inch and 16-inch models of the “MacBook Pro with a ProLED (PROLED) XDR display” on the 29th. The new MacBook supports partial peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits, a 10-million-to-one contrast ratio and a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. In addition to the P3 color gamut needed for photography and design work, it supports Adobe RGB and can render at least 80% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut when editing HDR video and correcting color.Apple Inc. said it combines the tandem OLED panel with the display engine’s calibration algorithms and factory calibration to maintain uniform brightness and grayscale across the screen. It said that controlling color and luminance for each pixel in real time also improves accuracy, even in fast-moving images. A nano-texture option that reduces screen reflections and glare in bright environments is also available.
This is also the first time touch functionality has been included in the MacBook Pro. Users can swipe through webpages or pinch to zoom in on photos, while designers can use the entire screen like a canvas. Musicians can play software instruments on the screen, and app developers can test touch interactions for iPhone and iPad apps on the MacBook Pro. Integrating the touch sensors directly into the panel improves response times, and users can also continue to use existing keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures.
Dynamic Island, appearing on a Mac for the first time, serves as a space for Spotlight search, Live Activities and Siri AI. Users can handle tasks such as answering calls, controlling music and checking AirDrop requests at the top of the screen.
Equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips...configurations of up to 16TB
The new models are equipped with Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designed for its professional laptops. With support for up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage, they are aimed at demanding tasks such as video editing, 3D work and running on-device AI. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, and the chips also feature a third-generation ray-tracing engine. The 14-inch model weighs 1.38kg, and the 16-inch model weighs 1.82kg. Battery life is up to 24 hours, and the laptops feature a six-speaker audio system, a 12MP Center Stage camera and studio-quality microphones. They also offer three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot and MagSafe. The M5 Pro model can connect to up to three external displays, while the M5 Max model can connect to up to four.
macOS 27 supports touch input, Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features.
Apple Inc. will begin taking preorders for the new MacBook Pro on the 30th and officially launch it on November 6.
Apple Inc. Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji said, “The new MacBook Pro combines state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology with the display engine’s algorithms to deliver the visual fidelity professional users have been looking for,” and emphasized, “Touch and the performance of the M5 Pro and M5 Max open the door to new ways of interacting.”
