[Financial News] Go Young-wook, a former member of Roo'Ra who served a prison sentence for sex crimes involving minors, strongly pushed back after being singled out online as the senior figure in the music industry who had rudely contacted Taeyeon of Girls' Generation, calling the claim “clearly false.”
On the 28th, Go posted a lengthy message on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying, “I’m trying to live quietly and just take care of my cats’ treats, but there are land mines everywhere,” expressing his displeasure over the rumors surrounding him.
Recently, an anecdote Taeyeon had shared on a TV show in the past resurfaced on online forums and social media. Taeyeon had said that a senior in the entertainment industry once texted her offering to buy her ice cream, then called her unilaterally late at night while drunk. Some online users pointed to Go Young-wook as the person in question, citing the person’s initials and other clues, and the controversy spread.
In response, Go made clear that he had spoken with Taeyeon only once. Recalling a recording of the former variety show “Beatles Code,” he wrote, “Taeyeon was a little late that day, so I was slightly annoyed. But when she came into the studio and said, ‘I’m a fan of yours, sunbaenim,’ my heart melted, and all I did was greet her awkwardly.”
He went on to claim, “I have never once called a female junior late at night in a rude, ill-mannered, one-sided way,” adding, “Female juniors who talked about me on TV have sometimes contacted me first in real life, and I’ve also met them socially and had a good time.”
In particular, he denied the rumors by bringing up his past relationships. Go said, “I’ve always been popular with women, and I’ve even dated the top actresses of my time,” then asked rhetorically, “Why would I call my junior Taeyeon in the middle of the night and do something like that?”
He added, “I’m living a life covered in all kinds of false accusations, but it’s devastating when people dig up old variety-show clips, decide they’re of me, and vilify me,” snapping, “I wonder if they think it’s okay to treat me this way because I’m everyone’s punching bag; what a pathetic way to live.”
Go Young-wook, who debuted with Roo'Ra in 1994, was indicted on charges of sexually assaulting and forcibly molesting three minors between 2010 and 2012. In 2013, his prison sentence of two years and six months was finalized. He was also ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor for three years and have his personal information disclosed for five years. After completing his sentence and being released in 2015, he has been barred from returning to the entertainment industry.
