[Financial News] Mirae Asset Securities is pursuing the acquisition of Sanko Securities, a subsidiary of Japan’s Okasan Securities Group. The plan is to re-enter the Japanese market by securing the local securities firm’s workforce and proprietary trading business.
According to the Nikkei and financial investment industry sources on the 29th, Mirae Asset Securities will acquire Sanko Securities and begin proprietary trading in Japanese stocks. The two sides are expected to announce the deal after their boards approve it this morning.
The acquisition will be carried out through Mirae Asset Financial Group’s U.S. intermediate holding company, and covers all shares in Sanko Securities. The price is reportedly around 5 billion yen (about 42.5 billion won).
Sanko Securities is a securities firm specializing in proprietary trading, based in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward. Proprietary trading is a business in which a securities firm trades stocks and other financial products using its own capital to generate profits. After transferring its business related to individual customers to another company in its group last May, Sanko Securities has focused on proprietary trading.
If the deal goes through, Mirae Asset will take over Sanko Securities’ existing business and workforce. As of its March 2026 fiscal year-end, Sanko Securities had net assets of about 4.6 billion yen and net income of 48 million yen.
The Nikkei analyzed, “The boom in the Japanese stock market is drawing foreign securities firms into the local market.” It added, “Overseas securities firms are continuing to expand their businesses as they seek profit opportunities in Japanese stock markets.”
