[Financial News] A wife who countered her husband’s proposal to give the parents on both sides birthday money in amounts differing by a factor of five with an itemized account of the support they had received—and succeeded in securing equal amounts—has become a hot topic online.
A post titled “I pulled out a calculator on my husband, who wanted to give 500,000 won to his parents and 100,000 to mine” was recently shared on an online community.
According to the post’s author, A, her father-in-law’s 70th birthday and her mother’s birthday fell a week apart this month. Before the celebrations, her husband suggested, “Since it’s my father’s 70th birthday, let’s give him 500,000 won, and since your mother isn’t turning 70, let’s give her only around 100,000 won.”
When A asked about the difference in amounts, her husband countered, “Your mother isn’t turning 70, and what did she even give us at the housewarming last year?”
Angered by her husband’s response, A immediately pulled out the calculator on her phone. She went through the support her family had provided, starting with a refrigerator worth 2.8 million won that they gave as a housewarming gift last year, then a gold ring weighing two don and 1 million won in cash that they contributed to their child’s first-birthday party this year. By contrast, her husband’s family gave 300,000 won as a congratulatory gift at the same party.
When her husband saw the contributions from both families laid out in figures and trailed off with, “That’s a separate matter,” A shot back, “Well, this is this, so I’ll give my mother the same 500,000 won.” Faced with the clear figures, her husband fell silent and eventually accepted her demand. A said, “It seemed he had nothing more to say when faced with the numbers.”
Most netizens who read the story said they found the wife’s response satisfying. They criticized the husband’s attitude, saying, “A double standard: taking the benefits from her family for granted but getting stingy only when it’s time to spend,” “It’s unbelievable that he says they did nothing after accepting a refrigerator and even a first-birthday gold ring,” and “A smart response that hit him with facts and figures.”
Others, however, offered mixed views, saying, “A special milestone like a 70th birthday may carry a different significance from an ordinary birthday,” and “It’s disheartening that gratitude and family obligations are being so meticulously calculated solely by the amounts exchanged.”
