[Financial News] The citizen who shut off an open gas-cylinder valve at the scene of a gas explosion in a commercial building in Incheon, preventing further harm, was identified as actor Yoon Dae-yeol, 48.
According to Yonhap News Agency and other media on the 28th, a gas explosion occurred at around 8:45 a.m. the previous day on the first floor of a commercial building in Majeon-dong, Geomdan-gu.
Four people—three workers in their 60s and a shop owner in their 60s—suffered burns to their faces and other areas. They were taken to hospital by 119 emergency responders and are receiving treatment.
Demolition work inside a restaurant on the building’s first floor was reportedly underway at the time.
Yoon, who lives near the scene, witnessed the accident while out for a walk. Knowing where the building’s LPG cylinders were kept, he found two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders with their valves open outside the shop, which was in disarray. He immediately shut them off and called the police.
A police official said, “If the gas had continued to leak, the dangerous situation could have continued,” adding, “We believe Yoon’s judgment helped prevent further harm.”
Police believe the explosion occurred while work was being carried out without the gas valve shut, and are investigating the specific circumstances of the accident.
On the 28th, Yoon wrote on his social media (SNS), “Yesterday, the restaurant owner and the three people working there were seriously injured in the gas explosion. There were people who arrived at the scene first, cared for the injured, controlled traffic, and called the police.” He added, “I only shut off the gas cylinders behind the building because I was concerned about further harm.”
He continued, “The injured, those affected, and the families of the victims who are grieving come first,” adding, “I’m sorry and simply embarrassed that I’ve ended up in the media unintentionally. I’m also afraid I might distract from the essence of this accident.”
He added, “Nothing about this accident has been resolved yet, and no one has recovered. I sincerely wish a speedy recovery, both physically and emotionally, for those injured, those affected, and the victims’ families.”
Yoon, who has mainly worked in theater, made his screen debut in 2014 with Kundo: Age of the Rampant. He has since appeared in films including Asura: The City of Madness, The Outlaws, Hunt, and 12.12: The Day.
