[Financial News] The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Housing & Urban Development Corporation (SH Corporation) will urgently provide 96 public rental housing units where fire victims who lost their homes in the major fire that broke out in Guryong Village, Gangnam-gu, on the afternoon of the 27th can stay for up to six months.
■ 96 units of 'emergency temporary housing' to be provided for 127 disaster victims for up to six months
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government and SH Corporation on the 28th, a total of 127 people from 91 households were affected by the fire in Guryong Village. With Gangnam-gu's cooperation, the city has been operating short-term temporary accommodations and emergency shelters since the fire, and has secured an additional 96 units of 'emergency temporary-use housing' where victims can stay after leaving the temporary accommodations.
Under the Enforcement Rule of the Special Act on Public Housing, emergency temporary-use housing is public rental housing provided to disaster victims for six months in the event of a disaster. The city plans to help eligible residents move into the secured units immediately once Gangnam-gu, the district in charge, determines the list of recipients and submits an application.
■ Linking phased housing measures, including 213 'temporary relocation housing' units with rental deposits waived
Separately, SH Corporation has secured 213 units of 'temporary relocation housing' for residents to move into and stay in during the Guryong Village urban development project currently underway. Residents affected by this fire are also existing residents of Guryong Village and may therefore qualify for the housing. It is also possible to link them to the existing relocation measures after they have stayed in emergency temporary housing for six months.
Residents moving into temporary relocation housing will have their rental deposits fully waived. Rent is also reduced on a sliding scale according to income, substantially easing housing costs for low-income households. Of the 1,107 households in Guryong Village, 938 have completed their move, while 169 households (15.2%) have yet to relocate.
In addition, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and SH Corporation plan to provide 1,107 units of integrated public rental housing so that existing residents can fully resettle after the redevelopment of the 3,739-household residential complex is completed.
Kang Seok, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Balanced Development Headquarters, said, "I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the residents struggling in the wake of the sudden fire. Above all, we will make residents' safety our top priority and do everything we can to ensure that both the disaster victims and other residents can live in a safe environment."
