Jang Dong-hyuk visited the site at Olympic Park in Seoul on the 28th and, regarding the start of the recount by the special counsel investigating the National Election Commission, said, “A thorough and fair verification must be carried out so that not a single doubt held by the public remains.”
This came 145 days after citizens gathered at Olympic Park to call for the protection of their right to vote, and 147 days after June 3.
In his remarks that day, Jang said, “I thank the citizens who stood guard at Olympic Park without a single break,” adding, “Since this special counsel is the ‘People’s Special Counsel’ created directly by the public, today’s verification must also be a ‘people’s verification’ that the public can be satisfied with.”
Jang then strongly called for the rights of on-site observers to be guaranteed. He said, “For a proper verification, observers must be able to watch together, and their right to observe must be properly guaranteed,” urging the special counsel to show due consideration and ensure fair proceedings.
He also explained the demands the People Power Party had presented to the special counsel, saying, “We conveyed requests made by the public for fair verification and clarification of suspicions, not for the benefit of any particular political faction.”
Finally, Jang added, “There was an infringement of the right to vote that should never have occurred in the constitutional history of the Republic of Korea, but citizens’ efforts made it possible to pass the special counsel measure,” and, “I hope the special counsel will heed the public’s wish for every precious vote to be properly cast, investigate the matter thoroughly, and uncover everything.”
