【Financial News, Hongcheon = Reporter Kim Gi-seop】The sports festival for people with disabilities and the provincial sports festival will be held in Hongcheon next May and June, two weeks apart, bringing more than 14,000 members of sports delegations to the county.
Hongcheon County said on the 28th that the 62nd Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival will take place over five days, from June 4 to 8 next year. Around 12,000 athletes will compete in 43 events. Thirty events, including athletics and soccer, will be held in Hongcheon, while 13, including swimming and shooting, will take place at venues outside the county.
Earlier, around 2,600 people will take part in the 20th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival for Persons with Disabilities, which will run for three days, from May 19 to 21. The event will feature 24 events: 14 regular, three inclusive and seven experience events. All competitions will be held in Hongcheon.
The county is stepping up work to improve venues and amenities ahead of the two events. It completed renovations to the main stand and spectator stands at Hongcheon Sports Complex last September and began renovating the athletics track in October, carrying out preparations in stages.
Hongcheon County Mayor Shin Yeong-jae said, “Having completed renovations to the main stand and spectator stands at the sports complex and moved on to work on the athletics track, we are getting a stage ready where around 14,000 athletes can showcase their abilities to the fullest.” He added, “We will make thorough preparations so that a festival bringing all residents of the province together can unfold in Hongcheon next May and June.”
