[Financial News] Yonsei University’s Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) and the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Nanomedicine Research Group officially launched the Translational Nanomedicine Hub on the 28th to bring the results of basic science research into real-world patient care.
There has long been a considerable time lag and gap between the development of advanced technologies in basic science and their application in clinical settings, where doctors diagnose and treat patients. The newly launched hub was established to reduce this lag and accelerate the development of technologies to treat intractable diseases by bringing researchers from fields including nanoscience, life sciences, engineering and medicine together from the early stages of identifying research projects.
Since its establishment in 2015, Yonsei University-IBS has built up a range of foundational technologies, including precision bioimaging using ultrafine nanomaterials, regulation of cellular functions and disease diagnosis. It plans to actively advance the clinical application of its research by building a collaborative network with major hospitals and medical schools in South Korea and abroad, including Yonsei University College of Medicine.
Cheon Jin-woo, head of the IBS Center for Nanomedicine, said, “When innovative technologies in basic science meet unmet needs in real-world healthcare, they can pave the way for new medical breakthroughs,” adding, “We will create a new paradigm for overcoming disease by bringing nanoscience and medicine together.”
Hub team leader and Yonsei University College of Medicine professor Shin Jeon-su also said, “I expect that close collaboration between scientists and doctors will create tangible value in healthcare.”
