【Financial News, Ulsan = Reporter Choi Soo-sang】Presiding Judge Jo Guk-in, sitting alone in Criminal Division 5 of the Ulsan District Court, said on the 28th that the court had sentenced A, a person in their 50s who was tried on charges including violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (theft), to five years in prison.
In January, A stayed at a hotel in Daejeon with a woman they had met at a nightclub. After the woman fell into a deep sleep, A stole seven items, including a pure gold necklace and a gold bracelet she was wearing, and fled.
A then used the same method in Ulsan, fleeing with eight items, including a diamond ring and a gold ring belonging to a woman who had stayed at a hotel with A.
A’s thefts did not stop there. A police investigation found that A had also entered unlocked hotel rooms and stolen guests’ jewelry, several million won in cash, credit cards and other items. A targeted a range of places, stealing valuables from restaurants, ordinary apartment buildings and vehicles. A even opened the rear door of a parked car and stole a wallet while the driver was asleep inside.
Investigators determined that the valuables A stole in this way from March last year through February this year were worth at least 15 million won.
After receiving prison sentences for similar crimes several times and serving time, A committed another offense just six months after being released.
The court explained its reasons for the sentence, saying, “The defendant committed another offense while on trial in a theft case and has shown no sign of seriously reflecting on the wrongdoing,” and, “The defendant needs to be kept apart from society for a considerable period, if only to prevent further harm.”
