[Financial News] A story has emerged of citizens joining hands to form a 'human chain' and rescue a woman swept away by waves at a beach in Spain.
According to Spanish outlet Euro Weekly News on the 27th (local time), at around 2 p.m. on the 25th, a woman sitting near the water and reading at Riazor Beach in A Coruña, in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, was pulled into the sea by a wave that suddenly surged in.
The woman was unable to get out of the water on her own. Nearby citizens who witnessed what happened immediately tried to rescue her, but reportedly found it difficult to reach her because of the rough waves.
A rescue attempt begun by a few people grew into a human chain of around 10 people holding hands, and together they pulled the woman onto the beach.
The rescued woman was handed over to responding paramedics and local police, then taken to a nearby university hospital after showing signs of hypothermia.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) had reportedly issued a yellow alert after forecasting waves exceeding 4 meters at their highest along the coast of A Coruña from that afternoon.
Inés Rey, the mayor of A Coruña, praised the citizens' “swift response,” but also noted, “It was not an appropriate day to read by the water at the beach, with a yellow alert in effect,” adding, “There are plenty of places to enjoy reading on Sunday.”
She added, “There could easily have been several victims, not just one,” and urged people to “call emergency rescue services in situations like this.”
