[Financial News]   A carbon fiber quality assessment technology developed by Korean researchers has been adopted as an international standard. The technology measures fiber alignment without damaging the carbon fibers and is expected to be used to manage the quality of carbon fiber products used in aerospace, mobility and other sectors.
On the 28th, the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency said that a method for assessing carbon fiber uniformity developed by Korean researchers had been established as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) international standard “ISO/TS 24858:2026.”
The technology adopted as an international standard measures how evenly the fibers are distributed when a bundle of carbon fibers is spread out into a thin, wide layer. It uses “eddy currents” generated by changes in a magnetic field to measure the electrical properties of carbon fibers, then analyzes variations in the measurements to assess fiber alignment.
Carbon fiber is lightweight and strong, making it useful in a range of industries, including aerospace and automotive. However, uneven fiber alignment can affect product quality and performance, so it is important to ensure uniformity during processing.
A key feature of the technology is that it can assess fiber alignment without damaging the carbon fibers. It is expected to be used in particular to maintain consistent quality during the “spreading” process, in which carbon fiber bundles are spread out.
Sang-jin Lee, a senior researcher at the Korea Textile Machinery Convergence Research Institute, and Professor Hae-seong Lee of Jeonju University participated as co-project leaders in developing the international standard. The Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency has supported the international standardization of related technology through standard development and dissemination projects over the past five years.
Kim Yong-man, president of the Korea Carbon Industry Promotion Agency, said, “The significance lies in establishing a carbon fiber quality assessment method developed by Korean researchers as a standard that can be used internationally,” adding, “We will support the development of standards and the expansion of testing and evaluation infrastructure to improve carbon fiber quality and strengthen the industry’s competitiveness.”
