[Financial News] With the budget for the “Advanced Industry Talent Development Boot Camp” rising from 15 billion won to around 134.1 billion won in just three years—an increase of about ninefold—an event where university students in the bio sector can hear job-search advice from current employees who came through the boot camp will begin on the 29th at COEX in Seoul. The program, in which universities and companies train work-ready talent through short-term intensive courses lasting up to one year, has expanded from 10 participating universities in 2023 to 88 this year. The Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) announced on the 28th that they will hold the “2026 Student Support Event for the Advanced Industry Talent Development Boot Camp in the Bio Sector” over two days starting on the 29th. The event’s name, “Roundup,” refers to a gathering place where people bring together and share information needed for career planning and grow. Held in conjunction with “EoPlus-Interphex Korea 2026,” hosted by the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization (KBIO) and opening on the 28th, the event will be attended by around 70 people, including students from four universities with bio boot camps and corporate representatives.
On the first day, a contest will be held in which students solve problems related to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). GMP sets standards for safely manufacturing and managing pharmaceuticals. Students will choose one of the problems posed by industry experts—improving biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, promoting a quality culture in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, or making release decisions based on quality test results—and propose an improvement strategy.
Eight teams will present in the final round. One team will receive the grand prize: the KIAT President’s Award and 2 million won. Two teams will receive the same KIAT President’s Award and 1 million won each in the top excellence category. Five teams will receive an excellence award, the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization President’s Award, and additional prizes.
On the second day, the program will feature a career lecture by a specialist consultant in biopharmaceuticals and a session with current employees who came through the boot camp. A current employee of Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., taking part in the conversation with alumni, said, “The experiments and hands-on activities I experienced at the boot camp helped me demonstrate my job-related skills more concretely during the job-search process.”
A current employee of GC Biopharma advised, “In your résumé and interviews, it is important to explain concretely how your major and boot camp experience relate to the position you are applying for.”
The boot camp budget rose from 15 billion won in 2023 to 63 billion won in 2024 and 68.25 billion won in 2025, reaching 134.175 billion won this year. Over the same period, the number of participating universities increased from 10 to 42 and then 47, reaching 88. The program supports eight fields: bio, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, secondary batteries, displays, aerospace, robotics and future vehicles. This year, 37 universities in artificial intelligence and two each in future vehicles and robotics were newly selected.
Since 2024, four universities—Gachon University, Yeungnam University, Chungnam National University and Hannam University—have operated the bio-sector program in partnership with companies. Gachon University provides intensive training in production processes and quality management in collaboration with 35 companies, including GC Cell. Yeungnam University supports joint practical training at the Animal Cell Demonstration Support Center and runs intensive training with 31 companies.
Chungnam National University develops and runs curricula with 40 companies, including Kabo Expert, and links them to its interdisciplinary major in biopharmaceutical practice. Hannam University supports students in collaboration with 50 companies and provides advanced hands-on training using facilities at its on-campus Campus Innovation Park.
Kim Do-wan, director general of the Ministry of Education’s AI Talent Support Bureau, said, “I hope students will actively participate in boot camp-related education and activities and build their expertise in the bio sector and their job skills,” adding, “I expect more students to grow into future talent who will lead Korea’s bio (K-Bio) industry.”
