[Financial News] Brazilian presidential candidate and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has arrived in the United States.
Foreign media reported, citing Brazilian news outlets, that Senator Bolsonaro arrived in Miami, U.S., on the 27th, local time.
His younger brother Eduardo, who lives in the United States, was reportedly at the airport to meet him.
Eduardo has been staying in the United States since last year and lobbying the Donald Trump administration for leniency for his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted on coup-related charges.
A senior police official said Bolsonaro has no official record of having left the country through immigration control because Brazilian authorities canceled his passport.
However, according to AFP, Bolsonaro is reportedly also an Italian citizen and has held that citizenship since 2023.
Brazilian authorities canceled Bolsonaro's passport because he failed to comply with a Supreme Court order to turn it in within 24 hours in connection with money-laundering and other allegations. He denies the allegations.
As recently as the previous day, Senator Bolsonaro said, "I have never even thought about leaving the country," and stated that he would submit his passport and cooperate with the investigation.
Some have also suggested that his trip to the United States could deepen tensions between Brazil and the United States.
According to CNN, President Donald Trump authorized Bolsonaro's entry into the United States. The U.S. State Department also said it plans to issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family. Trump administration officials knew that Bolsonaro had received an order from Brazilian authorities to turn in his passport.
The Trump administration indicated that it viewed former President Bolsonaro as being subjected to judicial persecution. Jair Bolsonaro, too, left for the United States after losing the 2022 presidential election and later returned to Brazil; he was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges of plotting a coup.
